Shin on Shin Backstep Pass

  1. Start by grabbing both your partner's knees. If the gi is available, grab the fabric

  2. Tip your partner to one side until their bottomside thigh is on the ground

  3. At the same time, shuffle your feet to the outside of their bottom leg and establish a shin on shin connection (if you shuffle to the right, your left shin should be on their left shin)

  4. Hop backwards on your free leg making sure to keep it out of reach. As you do, maintain a tight shin on shin connection. You can do this by pulling their knee back towards you as you hop. This will open a space between their bottom knee and elbow

  1. Once a space opens between their elbow and knee, use your shin and hand to keep the bottom leg in place as you step your far foot in towards their hip

  2. Keep their knee pinched tight between your legs (try to touch your knees together) and reach up to post over their head/far shoulder with the hand that was on the bottom knee

  1. Once your post is in place over the head/shoulder, keep your inside foot close to the hip and take a big backstep towards their head with the shin on shin leg

  2. Drop your hips high towards your partners head and shoulders and maintain your grip on the top knee

  1. Once you've backstepped, slide your closer leg up under their armpit, maintaining the inside space until you get to the side control. It is also helpful to maintain your grip on the knee during this transition
